Сentral and Eastern European Art Since 1950 (World of Art)

In the history of art of the second half of the twentieth century, central and Eastern Europe has the hybrid status of a vast borderland between the ‘West’ - capitalist Europe, where the movement from the neo-avant-garde to postmodernism was underway at this time, and the USSR, where an unequal battle was waged between archaising socialist realism and independent art that was reinventing itself in isolation. This border status explains both the lack of attention to the art of the Eastern bloc and its diversity, which was formed in constant dialogue with the West and the USSR and gave rise to many distinctive phenomena, some of which remained unseen, while others were developed in the post-perestroika period. Reuben and Maja Fowkes’ work is one of the first attempts to summarise this experience.
