Paris, 1814-1848. Everyday Life

Paris in the first half of the19th century could be compared to the capital of France of the present day. On one hand, it was a city of luxury shops with shiny windows, the lively traffic of public transport, and even traffic jams. On the other hand, rivers of mud streamed down the street, and people kept cows, pigs and poultry in their yards. How did Parisians spend their days in the period 1814-1848? How did they trade and shop? How did they eat in cafes and restaurants? How did they take their baths and how did they play cards? What did they watch in theatres and museums? Vera Milchina, historian of French-Russian relations, writes in great detail about very diverse aspects of Parisian life in the 19th century.
