The Uninvited Visitor: Mikhail Kuzmin. From the Silver Age to Underground Culture

Alexandra Pakhomova

Although Mikhail Kuzmin has long been regarded as one of the best-studied writers of the Russian Silver Age, the post-Revolutionary decades of his life and work have received comparatively little scholarly attention. Alexandra Pakhomova's book fills this important gap, tracing Kuzmin's literary career from the mid-1900s through his death in 1936 and examining texts, events, and archival materials that have remained largely overlooked, including extensive excerpts from the writer's diaries.
The study focuses on the evolution of Kuzmin's literary reputation, following the changing reception of his work from his earliest publications in the first decade of the twentieth century to the emergence of modern Kuzmin scholarship in the 1990s. By reconstructing these shifting interpretations, Pakhomova demonstrates how Kuzmin's place in Russian literary history has been repeatedly redefined.
Rather than treating Kuzmin solely as an emblematic figure of the Silver Age, the book presents him as a major twentieth-century writer whose influence extended well beyond his own generation. It argues that his work and artistic legacy played an important role in the development of Soviet uncensored literary culture, linking the modernist tradition to the unofficial literature that emerged under Soviet rule.
Drawing on literary history, cultural anthropology, and archival research, The Uninvited Visitor offers a fresh perspective on one of the most original and influential figures in modern Russian literature.
