The Intellectuals of Medieval Rus: The Origins of Russian Messianism

Igor Danilevsky

What questions occupied the minds of educated people in medieval Rus' before the reforms of Peter the Great? How did they interpret the events of their own time and the legacy of the past?
Historian Igor Danilevsky's book is a wide-ranging exploration of the intellectual life of Rus' between the eleventh and sixteenth centuries. Its protagonists include monk-chroniclers, church leaders, merchants, and even Prince Vladimir Monomakh—authors of some of the most important surviving texts of the period, whose writings articulated many of the era's defining ideas.
Through close readings of these works, Danilevsky reconstructs the language, cultural assumptions, and social context in which medieval Russian thought emerged, while also tracing the subsequent evolution of these ideas over the centuries.
At the heart of the book lies an examination of one of the most enduring concepts to emerge from the intellectual tradition of medieval Rus': the belief in the messianic mission and God-chosen status of the Russian people.
Igor Danilevsky is a Doctor of Historical Sciences and a leading specialist in the history of medieval Rus'.
