Portraying Central Asia: Perspective, Identity, and the Aesthetics of Contemporary Cinema in the Region

Kamil Gimazdtinov

The cinema of Central Asia is one of the most dynamic yet least recognized strands of visual culture in the post-Soviet world.
At times, films from the region burst onto the international scene through acclaimed appearances at major film festivals. Occasionally they reach commercial cinemas or enjoy renewed theatrical releases. More recently, they have begun to appear with increasing frequency in the recommendations of film critics and streaming platforms. Yet far more often, the cinema of Central Asia remains overlooked—not only abroad, but within the region itself.
The films of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan offer a distinctive cinematic perspective shaped by historical, cultural, and social contexts unlike those of European, Russian, or other national film traditions.
This book introduces readers to the filmmakers behind that unique vision. At the same time, it invites us to see Central Asia through the eyes of its directors, exploring how contemporary cinema reflects the region's identities, transformations, and ways of looking at the world.
